3 Way to Keep Your Business’s Indoor Environment Healthy

As commercial buildings are updated to improve energy efficiency, indoor air pollution is on the rise. Sealing your business against the weather saves you money on heating and cooling, but it can also trap contaminants indoors. Some pollutants cause health problems that decrease productivity and increase employee absences. Others can lead to serious medical conditions, including heart disease and cancer. When it comes to improving indoor air quality, there are three basic ways to keep your business’s indoor environment in Brighton, IL comfortable and healthy.

1. Control the Source

Source control helps eliminate products and practices that pollute your indoor environment. Cleaning products, paints and pesticides, for example, can emit harmful gases even when not in use. Store them in a safe place away from customers and employees. You may also wish to replace pressed-wood products, a common source of formaldehyde, with eco-friendly furnishings. Pay attention to combustion sources too. To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, schedule regular maintenance for fuel-burning stoves and furnaces.

2. Introduce Fresh Air

You don’t have to sacrifice comfort and energy efficiency to breathe cleaner, healthier air. Products like Trane’s FreshEffects energy-recovery ventilator uses energy captured from your building’s outgoing air to draw in fresh, preconditioned air. Gases, odors and chemical vapors are exhausted outside during the process, improving air quality. Due to the air pressure differential between indoor environments and the great outdoors, exhaust fans help bring fresh air inside too.

2. Keep the Air Clean

Regularly changing the air filters in your HVAC systems helps keep pollutants from circulating through your business. Air cleaning devices installed in the ductwork, however, are far more effective at capturing small particles. Because they are inhaled deep into your lungs, pollutants smaller than 10 microns pose the greatest health hazards. Capturing particles as small as 0.1 micron, the Trane CleanEffects air cleaner is 100 times more effective than a standard HVAC filter.
