4 Things You Didn’t Know About Geothermal Heating and Cooling Systems
Geothermal or ground source heat pumps are the most energy-efficient HVAC option for Brighton, IL homeowners. Geothermal heat pumps extract heat from the ground and move it inside to heat your home during the winter. They move indoor heat outside and into the ground during the summer. Here are four things you might not know about geothermal heating and cooling systems:
1. Geothermal Heating and Cooling Systems Also Heat Your Water
When you add a desuperheater to your system, you’ll save up to 75 percent on water heating costs. Desuperheaters capture heat that’s not used to heat your home during winter or is present in your home during summer and use it to heat the water in your hot water tank.
2. The Energy Efficiency Can’t be Beat
Using variable speed compressor technology, air source heat pumps can now heat smaller, super-insulated homes efficiently, even when temperatures drop to zero. However, geothermal systems are still more efficient than air source systems.
3. Federal Tax Credits Are Back
On February 9, 2018, Congress reinstated the geothermal tax credit for units installed between January 1, 2017 and the end of 2019. If you install a geothermal system during this period, you can claim a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to 30 percent of the cost of the unit.
4. Geothermal Systems are Cost-effective over Time
Although ground source heat pumps have a higher upfront purchase price, rebates from utility companies can reduce upfront costs. With efficiency ratings of 400 to 500 percent, geothermal systems can pay for themselves in three to five years. Most East St. Louis homeowners can expect to pay 30 to 70 percent less in monthly energy costs. The indoor heat pump unit lasts for about 25 years. The outdoor ground loops can last for 50 years or longer and maintenance costs are low.
